Yom HaZikaron (Israeli Memorial Day) is a day of remembrance for fallen soldiers and victims of terrorism in Israel. It is a solemn national day of mourning observed the day before Israel's Independence Day.

History

Established in 1949, one year after the founding of the modern State of Israel. The day honors those who died defending the country and civilians killed in attacks. At 8 p.m. and 11 a.m. a siren sounds nationwide and people stand in silence. It transitions into the joy of Yom HaAtzmaut (Independence Day).

How It's Celebrated

Attend memorial services, light a memorial candle, visit military cemeteries, stand in silence during the sirens, and reflect on the human cost of security and the sacrifices made for the country's existence. It is a day of national unity in grief.
