World Oceans Day
Monday, June 8, 2026
World Oceans Day on June 8 raises global awareness of the crucial role oceans play in supporting life on Earth and the urgent need to protect marine ecosystems from pollution, overfishing, and climate change impacts.
History
The concept was first proposed in 1992 at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro. It was officially recognized by the United Nations in 2008. Oceans cover over 70% of the planet, produce more than half of the world's oxygen, absorb carbon dioxide, and provide food and livelihoods for billions of people.
How It's Celebrated
Activities include beach and river clean-ups, sustainable seafood campaigns, educational programs about marine conservation, and advocacy for marine protected areas. People are encouraged to reduce plastic use, choose sustainable seafood, and support ocean conservation organizations.
