World Humanitarian Day
Wednesday, August 19, 2026
World Humanitarian Day on August 19 honors humanitarian aid workers who risk their lives to help others in crisis situations around the world. The day also serves to advocate for the safety and security of humanitarian workers and the survival and well-being of people affected by crises.
History
Designated by the UN General Assembly in 2008, the day marks the anniversary of the 2003 bombing of the UN headquarters in Baghdad, Iraq, which killed 22 humanitarian aid workers. The day pays tribute to those who have lost their lives in humanitarian service and celebrates the spirit of humanitarian work.
How It's Celebrated
The day is marked by campaigns highlighting humanitarian crises and the work of aid organizations. People are encouraged to learn about humanitarian issues, support aid organizations, and advocate for the protection of civilians and aid workers in conflict zones.
