History
Ukraine declared independence from the Soviet Union on August 24, 1991, following the failed August Coup in Moscow that weakened communist control and accelerated the dissolution of the USSR. The territory of Ukraine was part of the Russian Empire and later the Soviet Union after the 1917 Revolution. Ukraine had briefly declared independence in 1918 during the chaos of World War I and the Russian Civil War, but Soviet control was re-established by 1921. During Soviet rule, Ukraine experienced forced collectivization, the Holodomor famine of 1932-33 that killed millions of Ukrainians, and industrial development. The late 1980s brought glasnost and rising nationalist movements, culminating in the declaration of sovereignty and then full independence on August 24, 1991. A month later, 92% of Ukrainians voted for independence in a December referendum. Ukraine's independence marked the birth of Europe's largest country by area and ended centuries of Russian imperial and Soviet domination. August 24 is celebrated as Independence Day.
