History
Tuvalu gained independence from Britain on October 1, 1978, ending over 80 years of British colonial rule. The islands were first settled by Polynesians around 300 BCE. European contact began in the 16th century, and Britain established the Gilberts protectorate in 1892, administered from the Colony of the Solomon Islands. Tuvalu was known as the Ellice Islands until 1975 when it separated from the Gilberts. The independence movement was led by Toafa, who negotiated with Britain for full sovereignty. On October 1, 1978, Tuvalu became an independent nation within the Commonwealth, with its own constitution and system of government based on traditional Polynesian values. October 1 commemorates Tuvalu's independence and the nation's emergence as the fourth smallest country in the world by population.
