History

RMS Titanic was launched on May 31, 1911, the largest ship afloat at the time, built by Harland and Wolff in Belfast, Northern Ireland. The ship completed sea trials in April 1912 before embarking on its maiden voyage from Southampton to New York. On April 15, 1912, Titanic struck an iceberg and sank, killing over 1,500 passengers and crew in one of the deadliest maritime disasters. The tragedy led to major improvements in maritime safety regulations, including requirements for sufficient lifeboats and lifeboat drills. Titanic Remembrance Day honors those who lost their lives and commemorates the ship's place in maritime history.
