History
The historical roots of the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel date to the early 13th century, when a group of Latin hermits gathered on Mount Carmel, near present-day Haifa, Israel, following the tradition of the prophet Elijah. They built a chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary and became known as the Brothers of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel. The Carmelite Rule was approved by Pope Honorius III in 1226. As the order spread to Europe, the devotion to Our Lady of Mount Carmel grew. According to Carmelite tradition, on July 16, 1251, the Virgin Mary appeared to Saint Simon Stock, the English prior general of the Carmelites, and presented him with the Brown Scapular, promising salvation to those who wore it devoutly. This vision is the foundation for the scapular devotion. The feast was officially added to the universal Roman Catholic calendar in 1726 by Pope Benedict XIII. It has since become one of the most popular Marian feasts, especially in Latin America, Italy, Spain, and the Philippines.
