History
Texas declared independence from Mexico on March 2, 1836, following a series of conflicts between Anglo-American settlers and the Mexican government. After Stephen F. Austin established the first Anglo colony in 1823, tensions grew between the settlers and Mexican President Antonio López de Santa Anna, who abolished the Mexican constitution and centralized power. Texan colonists, led by delegates including George Washington Childress, declared independence at Washington-on-the-Brazos. The famous Battle of the Alamo occurred in March 1836, where Texan defenders held out against Mexican forces for 13 days before being defeated. Texas forces under Sam Houston achieved victory at the Battle of San Jacinto on April 21, 1836, securing Texan independence. The Republic of Texas existed for nine years before joining the United States in 1845. March 2 commemorates Texas Independence Day and the establishment of the Republic of Texas.
