History

Tanzania's independence on December 9, 1961, marked the end of colonial rule following the 1886 agreement between Britain and Germany that divided East Africa into spheres of influence. Tanganyika was colonized by Germany until after World War I, when it became a British mandate under the name Tanganyika Territory. Following World War II, Tanganyika moved toward independence through constitutional reforms. Julius Nyerere and the Tanganyika African National Union (TANU) led the independence movement, advocating for uhuru (freedom). Tanganyika gained independence on December 9, 1961, and later united with Zanzibar in 1964 to form Tanzania. Zanzibar had its own complex history, gaining independence from Britain in December 1963 before the union with Tanganyika created Tanzania. December 9 commemorates Tanganyika's independence and the beginning of Tanzania as a unified nation under President Julius Nyerere.
