History
Switzerland National Day on August 1 commemorates the founding of the Swiss Confederation in 1291. On that date, the cantons of Uri, Schwyz, and Unterwalden signed the Federal Charter, creating a defensive alliance against external threats. This covenant, sealed at the Rütli meadow, is considered the foundational document of the Swiss nation. The three cantons were part of the Holy Roman Empire but sought to protect their local autonomy from Habsburg expansion. Over the following centuries, more cantons joined the confederation, and Switzerland gradually expanded its territory and developed its unique federal system. Switzerland declared independence from the Holy Roman Empire in 1648 following the Peace of Westphalia. August 1 is celebrated throughout Switzerland with bonfires, parades, and speeches, marking the birth of the Swiss nation.
