History
Saint Patrick was born in Roman Britain in the late 4th century and was captured by Irish raiders at age sixteen, taken to Ireland as a slave. After escaping and returning to Britain, he became a Christian cleric and later returned to Ireland as a missionary, traditionally credited with converting the Irish people to Christianity. Legend holds that he used the three-leafed shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity, and that he drove all snakes from Ireland. By the 7th century, March 17 had become established as his feast day. In 1631, the Catholic Church officially placed St. Patrick's Day on the liturgical calendar. The first St. Patrick's Day parade was held not in Ireland but in New York City in 1762, organized by Irish soldiers serving in the British army. The holiday gained political significance in 1903 when it became a public holiday in Ireland, and the parade in Dublin became a national showcase. The tradition of dyeing the Chicago River green began in 1962.
