History

The Dutch East India Company established a refreshment station at present-day Cape Town in 1652, marking the beginning of colonialism in South Africa. For over two centuries, the region was ruled by the Dutch, then the British after 1806. The discovery of diamonds in 1867 and gold in 1886 brought waves of European settlers and加剧 racial tensions. Apartheid was formally established in 1948, institutionalized racial segregation that affected all aspects of life. The Sharpeville massacre in 1960 and the Soweto uprising in 1976 demonstrated brutal resistance to apartheid. International sanctions and internal pressure led to negotiations that culminated in 1994 elections where Nelson Mandela became the first Black president. Freedom Day commemorates the first democratic election held on April 27, 1994, marking the end of apartheid and the birth of a new nation.
