History
Singapore gained independence from Malaysia on August 9, 1965, becoming a sovereign nation after a brief period as part of the Malaysian Federation. Previously a British colonial settlement and later part of Malaysia for two years, Singapore's independence was the result of political disagreements between the Singaporean and Malaysian governments, particularly over issues of ethnic Chinese representation and economic policies. Lee Kuan Yew, Singapore's first prime minister, led the nation through its transition to full independence. Despite its small size and lack of natural resources, Singapore rapidly developed into a major global financial and commercial hub.
