History
Seychelles gained independence from Britain on June 29, 1976, ending a period of French and British colonial rule that began in the 18th century. The islands were uninhabited when Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama sighted them in 1502. France colonized the Seychelles in 1768, and Britain took control in 1794 during the Napoleonic Wars. The islands were formally ceded to Britain in 1814 following the Treaty of Paris. Seychelles was part of British Mauritius until 1903, when it became a separate Crown colony. Following World War II, nationalist movements emerged, with James Mancham leading the independence campaign. Through constitutional negotiations, Seychelles achieved full independence on June 29, 1976, as a sovereign republic within the Commonwealth. June 29 commemorates Seychelles' independence and the nation's emergence as the smallest country in Africa.
