In 1925, 3. M researcher Richard Gurley Drew invented masking tape to help auto painters create clean lines. He later developed a transparent version using cellophane in 1930 that became known as Scotch Tape. The brand name 'Scotch' came from a comment about the tape being 'stingy' with adhesive during early tests. It revolutionized packaging, crafting, and repairs
