History
Samoa gained independence from New Zealand on January 1, 1962, ending colonial rule that began after the Tripartite Convention of 1899 partitioned the Samoan islands. Western Samoa was administered by New Zealand as a League of Nations mandate and later UN trust territory following World War I. During this period, Samoan culture and political structures were suppressed, though traditional chiefs and matai systems persisted. The Mau aetele ( Mau movement) emerged in the 1920s advocating for Samoan independence. Following World War II, the independence movement gained momentum, and New Zealand agreed to grant independence. On January 1, 1962, Western Samoa became the first Polynesian nation of the 20th century to regain independence, with Fiame Mata'afa becoming the first prime minister. January 1 commemorates Samoa's emergence as a sovereign nation and the restoration of Samoan self-governance after decades of colonial administration.
