History

Saint Vincent and the Grenadines gained independence from Britain on October 27, 1979, ending over 200 years of British colonial rule. Christopher Columbus discovered Saint Vincent during his third voyage in 1498, and indigenous Carib peoples inhabited the islands for centuries. Britain and France fought over the islands in the 18th century, with Britain gaining final control in 1783. The islands developed a sugar plantation economy using enslaved African labor, and after emancipation, indentured laborers from India and Madeira arrived. The Carib Territory was established for the indigenous Garifuna people. Following a constitutional conference in London, Britain granted full independence on October 27, 1979, with Milton Cato as the first prime minister. October 27 commemorates the nation's independence and its establishment as a sovereign Caribbean state.
