Monday, June 15, 2026
The Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is a public holiday in Colombia. It is observed 71 days after Easter, and always on a Monday, even though in many other countries it is celebrated 19 days after Pentecost, always on a Friday. In 2026, Sacred Heart Day falls on Monday 15 June. The holiday will be on Monday 7 June in 2027. Sacred Heart Day in Colombia is a day of devotion to God’s love for humanity, as symbolised by a representation of the physical heart of Jesus. The practice of devotion to Jesus’ sacred heart began in the 11th Century and gained impetus from such devotees as Bernard of Clairvaux in the 12th Century. Its first official celebration took place in 1670 in Rennes, France, and it was not until 1856 that it became a mandatory Catholic holy feast for the whole church. Originally, Sacred Heart involved the worship of Jesus’ wounds, which He received on the cross. Later, it was His love specifically that was reverenced, and a heart was used to depict it.
