Zimbabwe first declared 21 February to be a public holiday called “Robert Mugabe National Youth Day” in 2017. The date of the holiday falls on Robert Mugabe’s birthday. Even though he is no longer in power, the current government has said that the holiday will still be held. In 2027, Robert Mugabe National Youth Day falls on Sunday 21 February. The holiday will be on Monday 21 February in 2028. Mugabe’s important role in the founding of Zimbabwe as an independent nation and his longstanding influence in the country were cited as reasons for the new holiday in his honour. Yet, this holiday is also controversial due to the nature of decades-long Mugabe’s rule.
