History
Qatar achieved full independence from Britain on September 1, 1971, following the end of British protection over the Persian Gulf sheikhdoms. The Al Thani family has ruled Qatar since the 19th century, and Qatar was a British protectorate from 1916 until 1971. Sheikh Jassim bin Mohammed Al Thani unified Qatar's tribes in 1878, establishing the modern Qatari state. Following Britain's decision to withdraw from the Persian Gulf in 1968, Qatar began negotiating its independent status. On September 1, 1971, Qatar officially became an independent state, with Sheikh Khalifa bin Hamad Al Thani as the emir. Qatar subsequently discovered massive natural gas reserves that transformed it into one of the world's wealthiest nations. September 1 commemorates Qatar's independence and sovereignty, while December 18 celebrates the unification achieved by Sheikh Jassim in 1878.
