History

The Philippines declared independence from Spain on June 12, 1898, following the Spanish-American War and the Battle of Manila Bay. Spanish colonization began in 1521 when Ferdinand Magellan arrived in the islands, initiating over three centuries of Spanish rule. Filipino nationalists, notably the Katipunan movement led by Andres Bonifacio and later Emilio Aguinaldo, organized the Philippine Revolution beginning in 1896. The Spanish-American War in 1898 resulted in Spain ceding the Philippines to the United States, changing the colonizer but not ending foreign control. Filipino revolutionaries fought against both Spanish and American forces. Full independence was achieved on July 4, 1946, when the United States granted sovereignty to the Philippines after World War II. June 12 commemorates the first declaration of independence in 1898, while July 4 marks actual sovereignty. June 12 is the official Independence Day celebration in the Philippines.
