History
Pakistan achieved independence from British India on August 14, 1947, as a result of the partition of British India and the demand for a separate Muslim homeland. The All-India Muslim League, led by Muhammad Ali Jinnah, had advocated for a separate state for Muslims, arguing that Hindus and Muslims were two distinct nations that could not coexist in a single political community. The British Cabinet Mission Plan of 1946 failed to secure a unified India, leading to the announcement of partition. On August 14, 1947, Pakistan was born as a sovereign nation with Muhammad Ali Jinnah as its first governor-general, while India became independent the following day on August 15. The partition was accompanied by massive population transfers and communal violence that displaced millions. Pakistan's independence marked the realization of the two-nation theory and established an Islamic republic in South Asia.
