Orthodox Ascension Day is a major feast in the Eastern Orthodox Church commemorating the Ascension of Jesus Christ into heaven, observed 40 days after Orthodox Easter (Pascha). According to Christian scripture, particularly the Book of Acts (1:9-11), after his resurrection, Jesus appeared to his disciples over a period of 40 days, teaching them about the Kingdom of God, before being taken up into heaven from the Mount of Olives near Jerusalem. The feast falls on a Thursday, as 40 days after Easter Sunday always lands on the sixth Thursday after Pascha. In the Orthodox tradition, Ascension Day is one of the twelve Great Feasts of the church year and is preceded by the Leave-taking of Pascha. The celebration emphasizes Christ's glorification, his enthronement at the right hand of God the Father, and the promise of the Holy Spirit's descent at Pentecost, which follows ten days later. Orthodox Christians in many countries observe the day with special liturgical services and often with family gatherings.
History
The Ascension of Jesus is described in the Gospel of Luke (24:50-53) and the Acts of the Apostles (1:6-12), with the latter providing the most detailed account of Jesus being lifted up and a cloud hiding him from the disciples' sight. The event is considered to have taken place at Bethany, on the Mount of Olives. The Feast of the Ascension has been celebrated since the early Christian church, with the earliest documented references appearing in the 4th century. Saint Augustine of Hippo (354-430) wrote about the celebration in his sermons. The Council of Nicaea in 325 established the calculation of Easter, which determines the date of Ascension. In the Orthodox calendar, because the date of Pascha is calculated according to the Julian calendar, Orthodox Ascension Day typically falls on a different date than in Western Christianity. The feast has particular significance in Eastern Orthodox theology, where the Ascension represents the completion of Christ's earthly ministry and the beginning of the age of the Church.
How It's Celebrated
Orthodox Ascension Day is celebrated with a Divine Liturgy in churches, where hymns emphasizing Christ's victory over death and his exaltation are sung. The liturgical color is white or gold, symbolizing the divine light of the resurrected and ascended Christ. In many Orthodox cultures, the day is a public holiday. Families often gather for festive meals, and in some traditions, special cakes shaped like ladders are baked, symbolizing Jacob's ladder and Christ's ascent. In parts of Eastern Europe, people visit cemeteries and hold outdoor processions. The feast marks the end of the Paschal season, and the final singing of 'Christ is Risen' occurs at the liturgy, not to be repeated until the next Pascha.
