On March 20, 2003, U.S. forces alongside international allies launched Operation Iraqi Freedom, beginning the invasion of Iraq. Within weeks, Baghdad fell and the Saddam Hussein regime was removed from power. The subsequent occupation led to years of insurgency, sectarian violence, and political instability.
