History
Nigeria gained independence from Britain on October 1, 1960, culminating decades of anti-colonial struggle. The territory that became Nigeria was a collection of diverse ethnic groups and kingdoms, including the Yoruba, Igbo, and Hausa-Fulani, which were gradually unified under British colonial rule from the late 19th century. The British established the Nigeria Protectorate in 1900, consolidating various colonial territories and native administrations. Nationalist movements emerged after World War II, led by Nnamdi Azikiwe, Obafemi Awolowo, and Ahmad Bello, who advocated for self-governance. Following constitutional conferences and the 1959 elections, Nigeria achieved full independence on October 1, 1960, as a federation of three regions. Nigeria's independence marked the beginning of the nation's journey as Africa's most populous country, and October 1 is celebrated annually as Independence Day, commemorating the end of British colonial rule.
