Donuts, also spelled doughnuts, are a type of fried dough pastry enjoyed worldwide in countless varieties. National Donut Day honors this beloved treat and its place in culinary culture, from classic glazed rings to filled and specialty donuts.

History

The donut's origins trace to Dutch settlers who brought 'olykoeks' (oil cakes) to America. The ring shape was popularized in the mid-19th century. During World War I, Salvation Army volunteers ('Donut Lassies') served donuts to soldiers, inspiring the first National Donut Day in 1938 as a fundraiser.
