History
National Dog Day was founded in 2004 by Colleen Paige, a pet lifestyle expert, to bring attention to the millions of dogs in shelters awaiting adoption. The day also recognizes the contributions of working dogs in law enforcement, search and rescue, and service roles.
How It's Celebrated
People celebrate by spending quality time with their dogs, adopting from shelters, donating to animal rescues, and advocating against puppy mills. Many share photos of their dogs on social media and arrange dog-friendly outings or playdates.
