Earth Day is an annual global event on April 22 dedicated to environmental protection and sustainability. It mobilizes over a billion people in nearly 200 countries for clean-ups, education, tree planting, and advocacy on climate, pollution, and biodiversity.
History
Founded in 1970 by U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson as a national teach-in, the first Earth Day helped catalyze the creation of the EPA and landmark environmental legislation. It went international in 1990 and is now the largest secular civic event on Earth, coordinated by EARTHDAY.ORG.
