In 1206, Mongol. Empire Established. Genghis Khan unites the Mongolian tribes, establishing the Mongol Empire, the largest contiguous land empire in history
History
Mongolia declared independence from the Qing Dynasty on December 29, 1911, following the Xinhai Revolution that overthrew Chinese imperial rule. Before this, Mongolia was part of the Qing Empire and had been under Chinese control since the 17th century following the Manchu conquest. When the Qing Dynasty collapsed in 1911, Bogd Khan was proclaimed the ruler of an independent Mongolia. However, China reasserted control in 1919, and Mongolia later became a Soviet satellite state in 1924, establishing the Mongolian People's Republic. True sovereignty was not achieved until the fall of communism in 1990. Mongolia's independence movement reflects its historical legacy as the seat of the Mongol Empire under Genghis Khan in 1206, which was the largest contiguous land empire in history. December 29 commemorates Mongolia's declaration of independence from Qing rule and the beginning of the modern Mongolian nation.
