This includes Martin Luther King Junior’s birthday (MLK Day) on the third Monday of every January. In 2027, Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday falls on Monday 18 January. The holiday will be on Monday 17 January in 2028. Luther King’s actual birthday was on the fifteenth of January, but the holiday can fall anywhere between the 15 and 21 January. This setup ensures a three-day weekend on which to celebrate. Martin Luther King was one of the most famous of all civil rights’ leaders in the US, leading major protests and speaking up for the rights of African Americans who were discriminated against in state and federal law at the time. After he was assassinated in 1968, a movement began to honour his memory with a federal holiday. Such was passed into law in 1983, but it was only in 2000 that all 50 US states officially celebrated it.
