Every 1 May is Maharashtra Day to celebrate the formation of the state of Maharashtra on 1 May in 1960 as part of the Bombay Reorganisation Act. In 2027, Maharashtra Day falls on Saturday 1 May. The holiday will be on Monday 1 May in 2028. The new state of Maharashtra was separated from the territory of Bombay State by the Bombay Reorganisation Act, and Bombay State was renamed Gujarat. This was done based on linguistic factors and in order to refine the results of the 1956 States Reorganisation Act. The state government of Maharashtra sends out an official notice each year of 1 May being Maharashtra Day. Workers and students get a day off, and liquor is banned from sale for the day. There is a big parade in Shivaji Park, where the state governor makes a major speech. And there are other parade and events and official ceremonies, besides private parties in people’s homes. Finally, new government and private-sector initiatives are launched on Maharashtra Day, and thus, it becomes the anniversary of the previous year’s projects as well.
