History
Liechtenstein National Day on August 15 commemorates the birthday of Prince Johann II, the longest-reigning monarch in European history who ruled from 1859 to 1929. However, the Principality of Liechtenstein traces its origins to 1719 when the Emperor elevated the territory to the rank of Imperial Principality within the Holy Roman Empire, granting it full sovereignty. The House of Liechtenstein had owned the territory since at least 1342. Following the dissolution of the Holy Roman Empire in 1806, Liechtenstein became a member of the Confederation of the Rhine and later regained its sovereign status through the Congress of Vienna in 1815. August 15 celebrates Liechtenstein's identity as a sovereign microstate and the Princely family's long association with the nation.
