In 1920, French. Mandate Begins. Following World War I, the League of Nations grants France a mandate over Syria and Lebanon

History

Lebanon gained independence from France on November 22, 1943, ending the French Mandate that began in 1920 following World War I. After the Ottoman Empire's collapse in World War I, the League of Nations granted France control over Syria and Lebanon. The French colonial administration divided the region and maintained control until the 1940s. Lebanese nationalists, led by the Lebanese Front, demanded independence, and growing anti-French sentiment intensified during World War II. Following Free French General Henri Gouraud's declaration that Lebanon would gain independence, the Lebanese government unilaterally declared independence on November 22, 1943. France initially arrested the Lebanese president and government but was forced to release them amid international pressure. Lebanon emerged as an independent republic with a unique blend of Christian and Muslim communities. November 22 commemorates Lebanon's independence and its establishment as the Lebanese Republic.
