History
Latvia declared independence from Russia and Germany on November 18, 1918, establishing the Republic of Latvia after centuries of foreign rule. Following World War I and the collapse of the Russian Empire, the Provisional Latvian Government proclaimed independence. The Latvian War of Independence (1918-1920) resulted in victory over Soviet Russian, German, and White Russian forces. The Tartu Peace Treaty of 1920 recognized Latvia's sovereignty. Latvia maintained independence for 20 years before being annexed by the Soviet Union in 1940 following the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact. Under Soviet rule, Latvians experienced mass deportations, forced collectivization, and cultural suppression that nearly eradicated their national identity. The Singing Revolution of the late 1980s, characterized by mass demonstrations and singing, led to the restoration of independence. Latvia declared full independence on August 21, 1991, during the failed coup in Moscow. November 18 is celebrated as Independence Day, commemorating the birth of the modern Latvian nation and its restoration after half a century of Soviet occupation.
