History

On August 2, 1990, Iraq under Saddam Hussein invaded and annexed Kuwait in a move widely condemned by the international community. The invasion displaced hundreds of thousands of Kuwaitis and led to widespread human rights abuses. The United Nations imposed sanctions and authorized military intervention. A coalition of 35 nations, led by the United States, launched Operation Desert Storm in January 1991. After six weeks of bombing and a 100-hour ground offensive, Iraqi forces were expelled. Kuwait was liberated on February 26, 1991, and Liberation Day celebrates the restoration of sovereignty and the courage of those who resisted occupation.
