History

A NATO-led air campaign ended the Kosovo War in June 1999, ushering in United Nations administration over the region. Serbian forces had committed atrocities against ethnic Albanians during the conflict, leading to mass displacement. The Kosovo Liberation Army fought for independence from Serbian rule. The United Nations Security Council Resolution 1244 placed Kosovo under UN administration. Kosovo declared independence on February 17, 2008, which remains partially recognized internationally. Constitution Day on April 9 commemorates the adoption of Kosovo's constitution in 2008, establishing the framework for democratic governance and multi-ethnic coexistence.
