History
Jose Abad Santos was born on February 19, 1886, in San Fernando, Pampanga, to Vicente Abad Santos and Toribia Santos. He earned his law degree from the University of Santo Tomas in 1911 and was admitted to the bar the same year. He served in various government positions before being appointed Associate Justice of the Supreme Court in 1932. In December 1941, President Manuel L. Quezon appointed him Chief Justice. Following the Japanese invasion, Santos accompanied the Commonwealth government into exile but was captured by Japanese forces in April 1942. He was ordered to collaborate with the Japanese occupation government and administer the Philippines under their rule, but he steadfastly refused. On May 2, 1942, he was executed by a Japanese firing squad, becoming one of the most revered martyrs of the Philippine resistance.
