History
Jamaica gained independence from Britain on August 6, 1962, after more than 300 years of colonial rule. Christopher Columbus first arrived on the island during his second voyage in 1494, and Spain established a colony in 1509. The Spanish brought enslaved Africans to work plantations, and when Britain took control in 1655, the British continued and expanded the plantation system. Jamaica became Britain's most valuable Caribbean colony through sugar production, built on the backs of enslaved Africans. Following a series of slave rebellions and the abolition of slavery in 1834, the path toward political independence gradually emerged. The People's National Party and Jamaica Labour Party led the independence movement in the mid-20th century. On August 6, 1962, Jamaica became an independent sovereign state within the Commonwealth, with Sir William Alexander as the first governor-general representing the British monarch. August 6 commemorates the nation's independence and cultural identity.
