History

After the Allied invasion of Sicily and a vote of no-confidence from the Grand Council of Fascism, Benito Mussolini was removed from power in July 1943. Italy signed an armistice with the Allies and subsequently declared war on Germany. German forces occupied northern Italy, establishing the Italian Social Republic. The Italian Resistance, comprising partisans and patriots, fought against Nazi-fascist forces. Liberation of Italy came on April 25, 1945, when partisan forces liberated Milan and Turin. This date is celebrated as Liberation Day, marking the end of fascist rule and the return of democracy to Italy.
