History
Indonesia declared independence from the Netherlands on August 17, 1945, following the end of Japanese occupation during World War II. The Dutch East India Company first established colonial presence in the early 17th century, and the Netherlands subsequently colonized the Indonesian archipelago for over three centuries. Following Japan's surrender in August 1945, independence leaders Sukarno and Mohammad Hatta proclaimed the Republic of Indonesia on August 17, 1945. The Netherlands initially attempted to reassert control, leading to a four-year armed struggle known as the Indonesian National Revolution. Through diplomatic negotiations and international pressure, the Netherlands finally recognized Indonesian sovereignty in 1949 following the Round Table Conference. August 17 is celebrated annually as Independence Day, commemorating the day Indonesia emerged from colonial rule as the world's largest archipelago and the most populous Muslim-majority nation.
