History
During the 1800s, Hungary battled for independence from the Habsburg Empire, culminating in the Austro-Hungarian Compromise of 1867 that established the dual monarchy. After World War I and the Treaty of Trianon in 1920, Hungary lost two-thirds of its territory. The Hungarian Republic was officially proclaimed in 1946, ending the regency after the death of Admiral Horthy. The new republic faced Soviet influence and eventually became a People's Republic under communist rule until the changes of 1989. The transition to the Third Hungarian Republic occurred on October 23, 1989, marked by a student demonstration on the anniversary of the 1956 uprising against Soviet rule.
