Every 15 April is a public holiday called “Himachal Day” in the state of Himachal Pradesh. It is the anniversary of the creation of the province of Himachal Pradesh in 1948. However, statehood did not come until 1971, which is the basis for a separate state-level holiday. In 2027, Himachal Day falls on Thursday 15 April. The holiday will be on Saturday 15 April in 2028. The high mountains of Himachal Pradesh, tucked up against the border with Tibet, have been the scene of legendary excursions of Hindu wise men and writers. The scenic beauty and bio-diversity of the state is breath-taking, and much of it remains as virtually untouched wilderness. The very name Himachal Pradesh is indicative of this mountainous grandeur; for “Himachal” is derived from a word meaning “lap of the snow”. The main event on Himachal Day is a grand parade.
