History

Guinea gained independence from France on October 2, 1958, becoming the first French West African colony to achieve full independence. Following World War II, France established the French Union allowing limited self-governance, but Guinea's independence leader Ahmed Sékou Touré advocated for complete separation from France. In the 1958 constitutional referendum, Guinea was the only French West African territory to vote overwhelmingly for immediate independence, rejecting the proposed French Community. On October 2, 1958, Guinea declared itself the Republic of Guinea with Sékou Touré as president. Guinea's independence sparked a wave of decolonization across Africa and set a precedent for other colonies seeking full sovereignty. France withdrew all administrative and military support immediately, leaving the new nation to fend for itself. October 2 commemorates Guinea's bold decision to pursue complete independence and the establishment of the first modern African republic.
