History

Germany occupied Guernsey from June 30, 1940, until May 9, 1945, during World War II. The occupation caused immense hardship for islanders including food shortages, forced labor, and deportations. The Nazis used the island for intelligence operations and built fortifications. Liberation came with the arrival of Allied forces following the surrender of Germany. Guernsey's liberation marked the end of five years of Nazi occupation in the Channel Islands. The holiday commemorates the restoration of British administration and honors those who suffered under occupation.
