days to go

The Green Man Festival is an annual music, science, and arts festival held in the Brecon Beacons National Park in Wales, typically taking place over four days in mid-August. Founded in 2003 by Jo Bartlett and Danny Hagan with financial backing from Welsh musician Gruff Rhys, the festival began as a small, family-friendly event focused on alternative, folk, and indie music. Named after the Green Man, a mythical figure in British folklore symbolizing rebirth and the natural world, the festival has grown into one of the United Kingdom's most respected independent festivals. It has a capacity of approximately 25,000 attendees and is known for its intimate atmosphere, stunning mountain setting, and commitment to environmental sustainability. The festival has hosted performances by major artists including Fleet Foxes, Bjork, Patti Smith, and The National. In 2019, it was acquired by Festival Republic, the UK's leading festival operator.

History

Jo Bartlett and Danny Hagan organized the first Green Man Festival in 2003 at Craig-y-nos Castle in the Brecon Beacons with around 300 attendees. The festival moved to its current permanent home at Glanusk Park Estate in 2004, where it expanded each year. The festival's ethos from the beginning emphasized a relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere with a strong focus on music discovery. In 2010, the festival introduced the Babbling Tongues literature and performance area, and in 2013, it launched Einstein's Garden, a dedicated science and discovery area. The 2018 event saw the introduction of a new main stage area to accommodate growing attendance. Throughout its history, the festival has maintained a strong commitment to environmental practices, including banning single-use plastics and implementing comprehensive recycling programs.

How It's Celebrated

Green Man Festival features live music across multiple stages including the Mountain Stage, Far Out, and the Chai Wallahs tent. Beyond music, the festival offers Einstein's Garden with interactive science exhibits and workshops, the Babbling Tongues area for literature and spoken word performances, and a dedicated family camping area with children's activities. The festival is known for its late-night DJ sets, real ale bars, and diverse food offerings highlighting Welsh produce. Festival-goers camp in the scenic Usk Valley with views of the Brecon Beacons mountains. The event maintains a strong focus on environmental sustainability with compost toilets, recycling stations, and a ban on single-use plastics. Attendees are encouraged to arrive by public transport or bicycle.
