days to go

In 1498, Vasco da. Gama's Arrival. The Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama arrives in Calicut, marking the beginning of Portuguese influence in India

History

Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama arrived in Calicut in 1498, establishing the beginning of Portuguese colonial presence in India. Goa became a Portuguese colony in 1510 when Afonso de Albuquerque captured it. For over four centuries, Goa remained under Portuguese rule despite Dutch and British competition. Portuguese colonial policies restricted Indian languages and cultures while promoting Catholicism. India annexed Goa in 1961 after Portuguese refusal to withdraw, a move accompanied by international attention on decolonization. Liberation Day commemorates December 19, 1961, when Goa became part of India, ending 450 years of Portuguese rule.
