The Feast of Saint Joseph, celebrated on March 19, is a solemnity in the Catholic Church honoring Joseph, the husband of the Virgin Mary and the legal father of Jesus Christ. Though details of Joseph's life are sparse in the Gospels, he is depicted as a righteous and compassionate man who accepted his role as guardian of the Holy Family. Veneration of Saint Joseph grew gradually in the Western Church, gaining momentum through the efforts of prominent theologians such as Jean Gerson, who composed an Office of the Espousals of Joseph around 1400 and advocated for formal recognition at the Council of Constance in 1414. Pope Sixtus IV added the feast to the Roman Calendar around 1479, and Pope Gregory XV declared it a holy day of obligation in 1621. Saint Joseph is the patron saint of workers, fathers, and the universal Church, and his feast carries particular significance in Sicily, Spain, Portugal, and the Philippines.
History
Devotion to Saint Joseph emerged relatively late in Christian history. The earliest known feast in his honor was introduced by the Benedictines around 1030. The great flowering of Josephite devotion occurred in the 15th century, led by Jean Gerson, St. Bernardine of Siena, and St. Vincent Ferrer. At the Council of Constance (1414-1418), Gerson argued passionately for official recognition. Pope Sixtus IV (1471-1484) approved the feast for the universal Church. Pope Gregory XV elevated it to a holy day of obligation in 1621. In 1870, Pope Pius IX declared Saint Joseph the patron of the universal Church, and in 1955, Pope Pius XII established May 1 as the Feast of Saint Joseph the Worker.
How It's Celebrated
The Feast of Saint Joseph is observed with special Masses, processions, and the blessing of fathers and workers. In Sicily, the celebration includes the preparation of elaborate 'St. Joseph's altars' (Tavola di San Giuseppe) featuring traditional foods such as sfinge, zeppole, and bread shaped like crosses, staffs, or lilies. In Spain, the day is celebrated as Father's Day (Dia del Padre). In the Philippines, communities hold processions and feasts with local delicacies. It is traditional to wear red clothing in honor of Saint Joseph and to give food to the poor on this day.
