Father's Day, the third Sunday in June in the U.S., celebrates fathers and father figures with gifts, cards, outings, and appreciation for their role in families and communities.
History
Inspired by Mother's Day, it was first promoted by Sonora Smart Dodd in 1910 to honor her widowed father. It became a permanent national holiday in 1972. Like Mother's Day, it mixes personal appreciation with significant commercial activity.
