History

Equatorial Guinea gained independence from Spain on October 12, 1968, ending over a century of Spanish colonial rule. The territory, which includes the mainland region of Río Muni and the offshore islands of Bioko, was colonized by Spain in the late 19th century, becoming the only Spanish colony in sub-Saharan Africa. Following the Spanish Civil War and the decline of Franco's regime, Spain began decolonizing its African territories in the 1960s. Internal nationalist movements, particularly the IPGE and later the MONALIGE, advocated for independence. Spain granted Equatorial Guinea full sovereignty on October 12, 1968, with Francisco Macías Nguema as the first president. The country was renamed Equatorial Guinea as the mainland territory is near the equator. October 12 commemorates the nation's independence and the establishment of Africa's only Spanish-speaking republic.
