Eid-e-Milad un-Nabi
Tuesday, August 25, 2026
Prophet Muhammad’s Birthday is a national public holiday in Bangladesh. It comes consistently on the twelfth day of the Islamic month of Rabi ul-Awwal each year, but the holiday occurs 11 days earlier each year on the Gregorian Calendar. In 2026, Eid-e-Milad un-Nabi falls on Tuesday 25 August. The holiday will be on Sunday 15 August in 2027. Prophet Muhammad’s Birthday is called simply “Mawlid” for short in most Islamic countries, but in Bangladesh, it is pronounced “Milad” instead. The word is Arabic and means simply “birth” or “birthday”. There will be special mosque services and other events on Milad throughout Bangladesh, and there may be some public processions as well meant to honour Muhammad. But in Bangladesh, all birth anniversaries are kept by special prayers for Allah’s blessings and the distribution of foods and treats to all attendees at birthday celebrations. And Muhammad’s birthday is kept in the same way, if with greater significance to Muslims. Additionally, it is common for selections for national Bengali poets and writers to be read at Milad gatherings.
